The Bard Stripped Bare Olaf Tyaransen
With The Story Of O, poet and journalist OLAF TYARANSEN has written an Irish memoir like no other before, a remarkable, powerful, controversial and outrageously funny book that s set to catapult him into the literary limelight and to the top of the best-sellers lists over the coming weeks. If you think that the accompanying pix tell the naked truth, just wait till you read the book. Ireland s first outlaw autobiography, it s an uncompromisingly confessional tale of literature, sex, drugs, rock n roll and rebellion. But it is also a beautifully-written tour-de-force, a love story that will entertain, shock and move readers. In this short extract, the author battered by the rigours of his pro-cannabis election campaign and broken-hearted by the apparent collapse of a long-term relationship goes completely off the rails. Mantis Barry O Donoghue
Dubstep may have largely passed Hot Press by until the arrival of the Burial LP, but we’re enjoying playing catch-up. Dusk’s ‘Mantis’ is simple and intoxicating: the cavernous sub-bass sucks you in, the gun-shot snares and electro touches keep it rolling while the music box-ish eastern samples and a simple string line set it apart.

Goodbye Supergirl Clare O'Reilly
Irish electronica group Electric Penguin’s promise has been lauded by Hot Press reviewers in the past, and I can only reinforce their high praise. ‘Goodbye Supergirl’ is a sublime piece of electro-pop from the band who are allegedly named after the password to one of Paul McCartney’s ‘60s houses. ‘Goodbye Supergirl’ narrowly loses out to O’Rourke’s ‘Big Bad Beautiful World’ as single of the fortnight.

Reasons To Leave EP Tim Smyth
National Student Music Competition finalists Monitor’s follow-up to the ‘Higher Than The Sky EP’ (a former Hot Press Single of the Fortnight) is full of promise. It conjures up the same dark spaces as Editors, but fills it with the clang and chime of Boy-era U2. Indeed, the sound, songs and skills displayed here reflect a band who’re eager to get out of here and fill some stadiums. With songs as compelling as ‘On The Verge’, they could yet make good on that ambition.
